An Indian Hockey Player

Before: He is an Indian professional field hockey player and an ex-captain of the Indian National Team. He made his international debut in January 2004 in Sultan Azlan Shah Cup In Kuala Lumpur. He took over as the captain of the Indian national team in January 2009. At a time when he was at his peak, he was said to have the best speed in the world in drag flick (speed 145 km/h). On 22 August 2006, Singh was seriously injured after being hit by an accidental gunshot in Shatabadi train, while on his way to join the national team due to leave for the World Cup in Germany two days later. He was almost paralyzed and on a wheelchair for two years of his life.

After: Sandeep Singh Bhinder not only recovered from that serious injury, but also established himself again in the team.

Under his captaincy, the Indian team managed to clinch the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in 2009 after defeating Malaysia in the finals at Ipoh. India won the title after a long wait of 13 years. Singh was also the top goal scorer of the tournament.

The India men’s national Hockey team had qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London after a gap of 8 years. The team had a resounding victory over France in the finals of the Olympic qualifiers by beating France 8–1. Ace drag-flicker Singh starred in the final against France by scoring five goals – including a hat-trick – all from penalty corners (19th, 26th, 38th, 49th and 51st minutes). Singh was the highest scorer of the Olympic qualifiers tournament by scoring 16 goals.

An Open Letter to the Nation for Transforming Technical Education in India by our Honorable Advisor Dr. M.P. Gupta –

The on-going decade has witnessed unprecedented recession in technical education system in the country. Few terms like “Ghost Campus”, “Ghost Faculty”, “Ghost Admissions” etc added to dictionary to quote mal-practices in many technical institutes. Employability and Campus Placements are the major challenges of the system.

Quality in technical institutions largely depends upon Admissions and Teaching -Learning Processes on these admitted students. Obviously, Admissions are the very basic input which becomes responsible for quality of the product.

The current situation of many private technical institutes is that instead of student allotment by the Government Counseling Authorities, these institutes spend crores and crores of rupees in bringing students through agents & brokers, false advertisements, and false commitments. These institutes are left with practically no money to spend on 2^nd important aspect of Teaching-Learning Processes. Also, students brought by such methods are unwilling, weak, and insincere. Obviously, the outcomes are far away the desired one’s. They are neither employable nor placed.

Significant to mention here that during my tenure as Director Technical Education Haryana from 2000-2011, ‘Admissions’ used to be an issue but of different dimensions. Seats were low and Capitation was there. Manual centralized Counseling was cumbersome, non-transparent, and time consuming. In 2006, State of Haryana was the first to initiate “On Line-Off Campus” Counseling. It was so successful that in 2008 State of Haryana got Gold Medal from Govt Of India for this activity and almost all states followed this procedure of counseling. The initiative and execution was my brain-child.

Based my experience and observations of admissions in private institutes in the past 6-7 years, I have initiated in Technology Education & Research Integrated Institutions (TERii) Kurukshetra a “Fifteen Days Residential Free Foundation Course”. Captain Tushar Mahajan was born on 20 April 1990, in a family of academicians. His father Dev Raj Gupta is a well known educationist in Udhampur, Captain Mahajan always nurtured the dream of becoming a soldier for taking on terrorists and eliminating them from the country. Read this small story of a village farmer and his daughter who undoubtedly took the smarter way and lead a happy life with his father!

Many years ago in a small Indian village, a farmer had the misfortune of owing a large sum of money to a village moneylender. The moneylender, who was old and ugly, fancied the farmer’s beautiful daughter. So he proposed a bargain. He said he would forgo the farmer’s debt if he could marry his daughter. Both the farmer and his daughter were horrified by the proposal. So the cunning money-lender suggested that they let providence decide the matter. He told them that he would put a black pebble and a white pebble into an empty money bag. Then the girl would have to pick one pebble from the bag. If she picked the black pebble, she would become his wife and her father’s debt would be forgiven. If she picked the white pebble she need not marry him and her father’s debt would still be forgiven. If she refused to pick a pebble, her father would be thrown into jail. They were standing on a pebble strewn path in the farmer’s field. As they talked, the moneylender bent over to pick up two pebbles. As he picked them up, the sharp-eyed girl noticed that he had picked up two black pebbles and put them into the bag. He then asked the girl to pick a pebble from the bag. Now, imagine that you were standing in the field. What would you have done if you were the girl? If you had to advise her, what would you have told her? Take a moment to ponder this.

What would you recommend that the girl do? The girl put her hand into the moneybag and drew out a pebble. Without looking at it, she fumbled and let it fall onto the pebble-strewn path where it immediately became lost among all the other pebbles. “Oh, how clumsy of me!” she said. “But never mind, if you look into the bag for the one that is left, you will be able to tell which pebble I picked.” The moneylender dared not admit his dishonesty. The girl changed what seemed an impossible situation into an extremely advantageous one.

I realized that, it is not the shouting of my father or my boss or my wife that disturbs me, but it’s my inability to handle the disturbances caused by their shouting that disturbs me. It’s not the traffic jams on the road that disturbs me, but my inability to handle the disturbance caused by the traffic jam that disturbs me.

More than the problem, it’s my reaction to the problem that creates chaos in my life.

Along with the above, TERii is moving one step ahead towards Green Energy and Clean Energy by establishing the TERii Vermi-Compost Plant. The plant shall be using the food and garden waste to make compost. The paper and other solid waste shall be segregated at the source and we shall do our bit to safeguard the environment.

The idea of fun in learning can be a hard one to grasp. Do you remember the last time you sat down just to learn something new or improve your skills at work? Though the idea of self-development is exciting, the process is usually a bit dull. There’s a lot of hard, boring work to do before you can reap the rewards. Sometimes it’s tough to motivate yourself.

THE SCIENCE OF FUN IN LEARNING

Fun has a positive effect on motivation levels, determining what we learn and how much we retain. Learning isn’t a one-off event. It requires repetition and dedication. If the experience is fun, learners will stay curious and keep coming back for more.

If the learning isn’t fun, it won’t be effective. That’s not just a sneaking suspicion – it’s cold, hard, scientific fact.

These are just three examples from the masses of research into the impact of fun in workplace learning. Though it’s a small sample, it’s clear to see the impact that fun can have on learning effectiveness, memory retention and in promoting self-led learning.

Thousands of years before the pages of history recorded the world of mankind, here philosophy, religion and learning held great meaning, one such land that was spoken of with great reverence was Kurukshetra. The cradle of vedic civilization, Kurukshetra its 48 Kms hid in its fold 360 places of pilgrimage. It was on this land Lord Brahma created man and the universe, say legends! Where that king Kuru, that great Aryan gave supreme sacrifice for the land and where lord Krishna propounded the philosophy of Bhagwad Gita. This holy land defines the true scale of life like Karma, desireless action, Gyaan the supreme knowledge and Bhakti the devotion in the light of Gita. Bridging the rich past and present, on the eve of Gita Jayanti, every year Gita Mahotsav organized at huge scale and this year marked as International Gita Mahotasv invites people from all over the world.

TERii was founded with a mission to impart education. The institution works on the philosophy of Bhagwat Gita wherein the efforts should always be done, rest God will shower blessings on you. We work hard so that our students should not work hard while looking for a job!

TERII is located in Kurukshetra in state of Haryana (India). The ancient city has a rich historical legacy and is revered as one of the bastions of the Mahabharata age. Dotted with ancient temples and redolent with the whiff of scholarly pursuits, Kurukshetra has always been a cultural and educational hub. Education is imparted at its best when combined with Education. This is what Nelson Mandela once said when he was rigorously working on raising the standards of education in the world and encouraging the students to study hard and develop the world with their talent.

There are two ways of imparting education. One is to make a student learn the concepts and principles followed and ask him to do the same as done by other. The other way is to make the student understand the concepts and principles and then ask him to do something with the same. In the second scenario, the student is always more creative who can exploit his/her talent and do something extra-ordinary in life.

The students at TERii wish to do something extra ordinary in their lives, henceforth we choose the other way of teach them by imparting education with entertainment. The faculty at TERii supports this and let student explore his/her creativity at the maximum extent possible to get something productive out. The students at TERii get all the facilities which they claim are not possible at the institutional level. TERii inculcates 20+ smart computer labs along with 5 workshops for engineering assignments which are opened even at night for our young scientists! They are given complete freedom to exploit their talent and explore the possibilities.

More than 90% of the faculty resides in the campus only wherein they have fun interaction time with the students. The students are free to have doubt clearing sessions in the evening with the faculty. The faculty in TERii also feels their institution as a family. There are no restrictions on gathering/implementation of knowledge.

Apart from this, TERii focuses on the overall development of the students by organizing events and encouraging the students to participate in them. The institute also takes part in a lot of other events organized by various institutions and organization where the students participate and bring laurels to their institute. The faculty members of the institution also take part in these events indirectly by giving a helping hand to the students during their rehearsals.

With all these, TERii develops an amateur student into a successful engineer, manager or entrepreneur by developing the overall skills of his/her. Life at TERii is all about practical exposure, entertainment and hard work leading to the overall development of the students.

CSR and its Importance in the Society

Corporate social responsibility, often abbreviated “CSR,” is a corporation’s initiatives to assess and take responsibility for the company’s effects on environmental and social wellbeing. The term generally applies to efforts that go beyond what may be required by regulators or environmental protection groups.

CSR may also be referred to as “corporate citizenship” and can involve incurring short-term costs that do not provide an immediate financial benefit to the company, but instead promote positive social and environmental change.

TERii’s Involvement in CSR

TERii has been continuously taking initiatives for the development of the society. There are regular measures taken care by the administration, faculty as well as the students to help the society in all the manners they can. Some of the initiatives taken by TERii under CSR are:

TERii Charitable Dispensary

Giving medical aid to the poor and needy is a big task of humanity. TERii has inculcated a charitable dispensary named as TERii Charitable Dispensary which is available for the local residents of Kurukshetra every day for 3 hours. The dispensary is equipped with all the first aid medicines as well as primary investigation tools as per our local resident doctor requirement.

With this, TERii daily facilitates more than 50 patients and their treatments every day.

Blood Donor Book for Kurukshetra

TERii in collaboration with Rotary Club and Sanatan Vidyapeeth Trust decided to publish a book for the common people of Kurukshetra named as Blood Donors of Kurukshetra. The book includes 10,000+ contact details of the people who have consented to donate their blood at the time of requirement. The biggest advantage of this book is that the names of the willing blood donors are segregated with their blood group so that any person who requires blood can contact the person with the matching blood group.

This book is available across all the local places of Kurukshetra including post offices, hospitals, police stations, bus stand and railway station for the convenience of the common man who can anytime surf through this book and contact with the blood donors.

Food Donation Camp/Free Food Stall

Feeding the poor is an act of humanity which should be practiced by everyone. TERii with its students and faculty organizes free food stalls every month for the local poor and needy people. This food stall caters to 500+ people at a time offering them food and other materials of kind which can help them to survive.

Free Education to Needy People

At TERii, every academic session incorporates 10 students who fall under the Below Poverty Line as regular students for various courses. These students are given proper education, food, clothing and study material at no cost. From the last one decade, these students have been with the institute and are thankful for amending their lives with proper education.

These are some of the initiatives which TERii is taking as a part for CSR for the development of the society. Apart from this, there are tremendous of other initiatives and activities which are taken place at the institutions.

The modern era of technology and enhancement of sales have set standards for marketers to leave the conventional ideas of marketing and switch to the latest digital trends. The students at TERii are constantly surfing on these trends, tools and techniques that are used in marketing over the digital platforms.

Digital Marketing has set its foot in the era of marketing in the country and mostly everyone is looking for it. Businesses even like small retail shopkeepers and owners are demanding for a corporate and e-commerce website for themselves in order to build a rapport of their brand and increase their sales. Thanks to the billion dollar investments on products such as Flipkart, Google and may others; Indians have started using the internet technology and somehow made them a necessity.

To introduce this and enhance skills on the same, TERii organized a workshop on the Digital Marketing in the campus. The workshop was conducted by the head of Relesh Infomedia (a digital marketing company based in Delhi), Mr. Jai Kathuria. Jai Kathuria is in the business of digital marketing from the last 8 years and has witnessed the revolutions that have taken place in Digital.

The 3 hours long workshop instigated the passion of Digital Marketing among the students as well as the faculty. Mr. Jai spoke to our students about the social media, its influence on end-user and the marketing strategy that goes behind utilizing the social media to a brand’s advantage. He interacted with them to gauge their understanding of different social media platforms they have been using in their daily routine. He quoted that digital media marketing is all about marking over internet.

The session further headed towards the latest in digital era, in which our expert explained how Internet became a common thing in India so quick. He shared few facts about how Flipkart in 2010 made Indians go crazy on the internet by giving discounts and cashback offers. He gave a reference of a recent study where India has around 45 million WhatsApp users and 350 billion smartphones. The report also showed that India ranks second with 213 million Facebook users in comparison to the United States with 219 million users. He cited, based on the statistical references given to the students, that Facebook is the most popular social network worldwide.

The discussion was not only limited to the concepts of social media, it explored the concepts of Remarking, Branding, Advertising and Socializing also. He gave many examples like missmalini.com, BB ki Vines etc which, through social media marking and promotions, are earning in millions. He also explained some terms like Search Engine Optimization (SEO), Social Media Optimization (SMO), Social Media Marketing (SMM), Influencer marketing etc. to the students. He also added that if one knows how to market a product in social media, then one can be a trend-setter and influence thousands of people. He gave live training for various uncommon social media platforms wherein the students and faculties part and learnt a lot.

We at TERii strongly believe that the students should be updated with the technology and the market trends timely for the overall development of the students. The students must be aware of the new trends setting in the market wherein they have to get absorbed; and Digital Marketing is one of them.

Our ancestors used to tell us that blood donation is the greatest donation among all. It helps in saving other people lives and health. With this hope, TERii Institute with collaboration of Rotary Club and Sanatan VidyaPeeth Trust initiated with a campaign to create a book of blood donors available in Kurukshetra along with their blood groups.

In India, more than 1 million people lose their lives every year because of unavailability of the blood they require. People searching for blood donors find it the most difficult task as most of the people are not even aware of their blood groups. This entire situation turns into a chaos leading to loss of life of the patients waiting for blood. To overcome this situation, TERii decided to create a book of blood donors who are willing to donate their blood as per the situation whenever required.

This book will be made available at all the local places in Kurukshetra such as hospitals, bank, post offices and other areas so that common public whenever in need can search and contact the blood donors.

In order to make this book a success, people must be aware of their blood groups and should be willing to donate blood. This was done with a blood group test camp organized in the campus of TERii in Kurukshetra where students and faculty participated in huge numbers. The students were encouraged and motivated by the Dr. Sagar Gulati (Director, TERii) and Dr. MP Gupta (Honorable Advisor, TERii) along with other eminent personalities from Rotary Club and Sanatan Vidyapeeth Trust.

More than 1300 students and faculty joined hands and pledge to donate blood whenever required. We feel immense proud of our students who stood up for this so pleasant cause of humanity and got themselves registered in this book.
